This is a procedure during which a small flexible endoscopy is introduced through the mouth and advanced into the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. This is a safe and simple procedure which allows for the visualization of the upper gastro-intestinal tract. Conditions such as erosive gastro-esophageal reflux disease, a hiatus hernia, stomach or duodenal ulcers, gastritis, stomach cancers and coeliac disease can be diagnosed with this procedure. Bleeding gastric ulcers and many other abnormalities can be treated endoscopically during this procedure.
I perform the procedure under conscious sedation, so the patient will not experience any discomfort. You are to be nil by mouth from the previous evening, or at least for 6 hours prior to the procedure as it is important to have an empty stomach for this procedure.
